1 slice white sandwich bread, crust removed and cubed
1/2 cup milk
1/2 pound ground pork, 1/2 pound ground beef OR
1 pound ground beef
1 onion, grated on a box grater
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp pepper, ground black
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 Tbsp. butter
1 Tbsp. flour
1 c. chicken broth
1/2 c. milk or cream
Whisk egg and milk in a small bowl. Added cubed bread, allow to stand for 10 minutes.
Mix ground meat, onion, salt, pepper, nutmeg, allspice, and baking powder to mixer bowl. Mix on high speed for 1 minute. Mash bread mixture until no lumps remain, add to meat, mix on high for an additional 1 minute.
Moisten hands and form meatballs into 1 tablespoon balls, place on baking sheet. Heat 1/2 cup of oil in a skillet and then add the meatballs. Cook for 5 minutes, until deep brown. Turn the meatballs and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Remove to a paper towel-lined plate and drain.
Pour off additional oil. Add butter and flour to skillet. Cook for 30 seconds. Add broth and stir rapidly to deglaze the pan. Turn heat to low and add milk or cream. Add meatballs. Heat until simmering. Serve immediately over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
